Last night I spent some time talking to a few dear friends calming them down, helping them to sanity check, and navigate evacuating the fires in SOCAL. Though they don't work in our industry, several of you have met these friends over the years. It reminded me of the principles that I keep in working incident response. I leaned on: 1. Being the most calm. 2. Being empathetic. It's ok for people to feel negative emotions, especially during events, I lean on understanding and channeling those emotions. 3. Assist in making action-oriented decisions smaller and more numerous. People, including you, make mistakes in responding to events, making decisions smaller and incremental gives people the opportunity to make smaller mistakes. In this case this meant asking questions about their driving, their speed, their gas situation, their fog lights, etc. Each of these are small decisions that can help people calm down and focus, as well as keep them safe. 4. Helping them avoid pitfalls. 5. Being honest. If I didn't know things I told them. If I knew things, I told them why (experience, news article, whatever). I also follow a mantra of: 1. Manage safety first. 2. Manage convenience second. 3. Manage emotions third. Getting folks to a safe spot is obvious, managing convenience to reduce the immediate challenges is important, but people often confuse this for the first priority. Knowing that it comes second enhances the first priority. Having emotions come last allows people to feel but also let's them know that their feelings don't influence what keeps them safe and what is most convenient. Always remember to communicate, even over communicate, your thoughts and focus on a mantra, your underlying focus is on their long-term well-being. Be flexible for people, but stringent on your principles. I remind folks that this is what I do. For 20+ years now, helping folks in situations, at it's core, is what I do. In professional terms since Blaster and MyDoom. Over that time, it became ingrained in who I am. Let them know that you're honored you could be on the other end of the phone in that situation with them. You're there for it. And lastly, maybe the most important. When everything is all said and done, whether it's a week, a month, whatever. Ask if they're ok. Over the years I've played virtually every role in industry in events (interim CISO, response commander, responder, SME, whatever), as I reflect on that, I recognize that these principles and steps have helped from all of those angles. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the fires in SOCAL. Be safe and take care of each other.

10 BILLION PASSWORDS??? RockYou2024 is the largest password leak in history, recently disclosed by a user named “ObamaCare” on a prominent hacking forum. It contains a staggering 9.9 billion unique passwords in plain text, making it a behemoth collection of compromised credentials. The Scale and Implications: This colossal data dump could potentially impact millions of users worldwide. While it primarily consists of previously leaked passwords (building upon its predecessor, RockYou2021), it still poses a significant threat. Cybersecurity experts warn that it increases the risk of “credential stuffing attacks,” where hackers use known passwords to gain unauthorized access to various systems. The threat extends beyond online platforms to offline services, internet-facing cameras, and even industrial hardware. Even though RockYou2024 includes recycled material, staying vigilant is crucial. Follow these best practices: Use complex passwords (mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols). Opt for longer passwords. Avoid reusing the same password across multiple websites (consider using a password manager). Change passwords regularly. Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible. Regularly monitor your accounts for any unauthorized transactions and be cautious of phishing attempts. Check out this cheat code for a simple way to remove unwanted/unused protocols on links. These protocols may appear when someone does something unusual, or accidental, and tries to communicate in some way that shouldn't happen in "that" part of your network (whatever/wherever "that" may be). I used to make software to help machine manufacturers manage their machines remotely. Twelve plus years ago I had a client that would roll out software updates to their technology kiosks. Even though they only had single digit thousands of devices, they did not push them out all at once. They pushed updates to their zip code, then their town, then their state, then their timezone, and then the whole US. Why did they follow this procedure even though they thoroughly tested the updates? Because if there was a software failure they wanted to limit the potential damage that their update would cause. They would "roll a truck" to fix the problem. They knew that selecting machines closer to headquarters would mean that they would have a lot smaller headache. Additionally, even if they bricked all of the local machines, the number of machines with problems would be measured with two or three digits and not four digits spread across the country. That is why the most shocking thing to me about the recent Crowdstrike issue is that they deployed to millions of devices all at once! From Crowdstrike on how they intend to prevent this from happening again: Refined Deployment Strategy ● Adopt a staggered deployment strategy, starting with a canary deployment to a small subset of systems before a further staged rollout. ● Enhance monitoring of sensor and system performance during the staggered content deployment to identify and mitigate issues promptly. ● Provide customers with greater control over the delivery of Rapid Response Content updates by allowing granular selection of when and where these updates are deployed. ● Provide notifications of content updates and timing. I am glad that they are taking this issue seriously but it seems crazy to me that an event like this had to happen for these type of changes. Message to everyone solution provider that makes an agent or every customer that uses an agent. A staggered rollout strategy should be absolutely required. Even if your company does not use Crowdstrike/Windows, you should be looking at all of your vendors that have an agent. What do you think?
